According to the World Health Organization, more than 90% of the world’s visually impaired live in developing countries. In the United States of America, there is one ophthalmologist per 16,000 people, but in many developing nations this is only one per million or even none in some countries. The result is that many people become blind due to lack of access to an eye doctor. This situation creates a large financial burden for families as it keeps someone from working and often keeps the youngest from going to school to care for the blind person. This continues the cycle of poverty that is difficult to break free from. Dr. de la Presa recently travelled to Ciénaga de Oro in Colombia with Medical Ministry International to provide all aspects of eye health care – from initial exams to prescription eyeglasses and life changing surgeries.
